How Much Communication Is Too Much? Blog 7 Due Monday, Oct 29th

Researchers looking at the impact of Facebook on relationships among college students found that the use of Facebook increased jealousy between friends and those in a relationship.  They identified four themes that contributed to increased jealousy.  They are as follows:
- Accessibility of information: Increased info about the interactions of significant others lead to increased monitoring and jealousy for 19.1% of participants
- Relationship jealousy: 16.2% of respondents were explicitly linked to Facebook use contributing to jealousy
- Facebook as an addiction: 10.3% of participants had major difficulty limiting the amount of time he or she looked at his or her partner’s Facebook profile.
- Lack of context: 7.4% of respondents referenced how Facebook can be ambiguous and that, without context, jealousy can be spurred over misunderstandings.
How do you think the use of technology has impacted interpersonal communication in the past 5-10 years?  Whether it be phones, texting, email, instant messaging, skype, social media, etc., has technology helped or hindered our interpersonal communication with others?  Please support your view with an example.

  1. I think technology has helped relationships so much. Many couples these days meet through the Internet in dating sites, and some of those relationships flourish into some beautiful relationships and even marriages. I believe technology gives us all an opportunity to explore different opportunities of meeting different people from all over the world.
My first year of college I met this guy who was from France, we started to date each other unfortunately when summer came he went back to France for the summer to spend some time with his family. Even though I was sad because we was so far away and couldn't see him, we would Skype every night here and morning over there :) (time zones sucked) but because of skype and Facebook we kept in touch and him being so far away didn't feel that hard on us!

    1. Great example of how technology can help build and foster relationships. Are you two still together?

  2. I believe that Facebook creates more jealousy. I'm not trying to sound like a bad person or anything, but when I see other people's statuses about going out, having fun, etc. I do feel a little jealous especially since I don't always have money. Plus, Facebook just somehow glamorizes other people's lives because you usually only see the highest points of people's lives. If it wasn't for the fact that I had FB on my phone then maybe I wouldn't be "up in people's lives." Does that sound bad? haha

  3. Welcome to the internet

Where men are men, women are men, and teenaged girls are really FBI agents.

  4. Technology has definitely influenced interpersonal communication, few years ago when my children were younger they used to play outside the house a lot. Now I have to kick them out, they are always too busy playing on their iPods, or their computer; mainly playing online games, looking at facebook or using Skype to talk to their friends. I have become too lazy to walk up the stairs and call my son; instead I use my cell to call him down. So yes technology has change the way we communicate.

  5. Regardless of any personal experience, the internet as well as mobile devices have harmed more than they have helped. It truly is a great thing to be able to connect to one another and reach others at just a push of a button, BUT what truly happens is almost like what Greg stated above. While humorous and funny its mostly true except for the FBI agent( even though I am sure it happens). All phones and internet has done has made people MORE sheltered and non committed.confrontational. Now when i say that i do not mean that everyone needs to "duke" it out but that we as the individual can sit behind a keyboard and phone and say whatever the hell you want to anyone you want. Now the whole jealously thing does happen a lot, and Facebook makes it easier for things like that to happen, because as optimistic as I am, the American human self will more times than not is weak, especially for young adults and kids. then you have Trolls.... and do not get my started there. I am a gamer and build pc's and all that so i don't use the word troll without fully understanding what that means ( and a lot of people do). Now to my beef with phones, talking on the phone is awesome, i don't mind talking on the phone at all and i prefer to texting. Why? Because it shows a certain amount of commitment to the other person for the conversation. Texting and most people who prefer texting say it is easier but in my experience its a way to keep others at arms length. For example you text a friend say lets hang right. If they do not want to all they have to do is not respond then when the next you guys converse, oh sry bro I have been busy. Now this is true in a small percentage but most the time its friends IGNORING friends. They just feel bad saying no so they avoid it all together. Same thing we talked about at the start of teh semester with relationships, all the girl or boy has to do is stop txting as much and not say anything directly to give the "hint" that i don't want to talk to you anymore. Now i do not believe in violence but My generation needs to grow some balls and just say what you need to say and not hide behind a computer or phone and be a little girl about it( Sorry girls ).

Some examples of where technology has helped can easily be seen in the military, husbands and wives in the middle east skyping with their family !! that is pretty awesome I am sure. And i know there is much more but i feel that those cower in comparison to all the drama/bullshit that it causes here. Many of you guys may or may not disagree with me but i have first hand seen how people lie to themselves and give justification for their actions that they take on fb or why they say things through text and not phone or person.
As for Facebook in general its bad, and dumb. Some uses that prove to be good but over all stupid and used as a system to connect to others in a not so personal way and online self esteem which can equate to E-peen. If you do not know what E-peen, well feel free to ask me in class lol.

This is a personal request for everyone in here, if you ever truly feel you wronged someone(whether it be boyfriend, girlfriend, best friend) and you want to apologize, please please please do not text that. < that exactly proves A lot of what i have discussed here with hiding behind technology and using it as a wall.

Sorry if this sounds more like a rant than a response but I feel strongly about this subject and for the most part am ashamed to be apart of a culture and generation in which BS like this thrives.

  6. In my own personal experience i have been through some crazy jealousy moments with an ex because another female posting something flirty in my page on either facebook or twitter which of course brought more problems into the relationship that were unnecessary and childish. I've gotten mad too for stupidity reactions i have said in the heat of the moments for being to jealous and it end up on being a terrible way to break up.
Social networks are just a bad idea to start off a relationship because its way too early start telling people yall are together and showing it without knowing for sure you guys will last for a long time.
However i see a phone as an excellent way to communicate to each other because you cannot be on the phone 24/7 so in my case texting works perfectly to communicate with each other in places such as class, library, or even at a party where the best thing to do if you wanna communicate with someone is sending a simple text message and talk to them through there instead of being constantly on the phone.

In conclusion, it could go either way so the way you want to communicate with each other is managed on what you are willing to put on either the social network or in a text. As long as you both agree jealousy will NOT be a problem then i believe its okay to make it "facebook official".

  7. The way relationships begin now and days is completely different than the way it used to be. Sometimes that is a good thing and sometimes it is a bad thing. It is a good thing because people are now more open with each other, because you do not necessarily have to share personal stories face to face. However, the way we communicate now and days could be a bad thing because nobody knows how to hold a conversation on the phone anymore. People rather text or IM on facebook. It is stupid. I was never able to have a phone until my sophomore year in high school, and I could not even text until my junior year. I know how to hold a conversation. My future partner better be able to too, because sometimes I like talking on the phone.

  8. i feel like these types of technology make a relationship alot more complicated. I cant go a week without my boyfriend wanting to go through my phone and text messages. Texting, twitter, face book, etc. make it so much easier to make a spouse jealous. I feel like technology is also an excuse to not see each other. Texting is good enough for some people so there isn't really any personal contact. I cant count how many guys are so funny and outgoing over text, but are actually super boring and weird in person. Now instead of a guy walking up to a girls door to pick her up, he calls her and tells her hes down the street so be waiting outside. It's SUPER annoying. I wont lie there have been sometimes when I see a girl tweet or write on my boyfriends wall and it sort of makes me jealous. I'm not too sure why, but it definitely does. I feel like if we didn't have theses things we wouldn't have such major trust issues. I can no longer talk to a guy friend without him thinking i'm cheating! It is absolutely ridiculous what the world has come to

  9. technology has changed everything about communication these days. Everyone is constantly in touch with everyone whether it be the internet, phones, etc. with these changes i think has many positive and negative changes to go along with it. something positive would be the wide variety of ways to start a relationship or the ability to communicate when ever, were ever can maintain an already existing one. But downfalls are if something big comes up such as 'Facebook' things can go south rather quickly and easy, or at the fact that its easy to stay in touch, if you don't respond the other person then they may take it the wrong way. technology has made it easier to order things and bring people together for meetings for business people. All in all i think it depends for how you use it depends on if it's helped or hindered communication.

  10. I think Technology is much like everything else in the sense that it can be used for both good and bad purposes, but ultimately it can magnify a person's already existing characteristic. For example, my ex-girlfriend wanted my password and login information to my facebook and cell phone. I refused to give her that information, not because I was hiding something, but it's the principle of the fact that she asked me. Anywhoo, she became really possessive and kept on questioning me about my status's if they were meant for somebody, or if a girl commented on a photo. Long story short, it didn't work out between us two. I don't think it's because of technology, but instead she was a jealous person and technology just gave her more access to utilize her jealousy, so at the end of the day i would like to thank technology for helping identifying that about her before it got too late..

  11. I think technology has made them worse, if someone says something to a friend of a friend and they go and tell your bf and not you and you don't find out till much later, it makes you wonder if you can really trust them for not telling you first. This has happened to me and thats why I dont like things like Facebook or twitter, if your important enough im going to have you in my phone book so i can text you directly and call you. And most of this stuff happens when your not face to face, so thats just one more reason why i dont like it. If your one of my closer friends ill call you or talk to you in person.

  12. I believe that technology has both helped and hindered communication. First of all, technology has helped by providing various methods of communication. I was in a long distance relationship for awhile so I am grateful to have access to the kind of technology, such as skype and instant text messaging, which allowed me and my boyfriend to maintain contact. Technology made the relationship much easier. There is a price to be considered though. With technology comes indirect communication. Although texting and skype may feel like direct forms of communication, they are not. Texting for one, leaves body language and tone of voice to be desired. Personal contact is important for a relationship too.

  13. I have to say from experience that social networks like Facebook and Twitter, along with other technological devices like cell phones and e-mail have caused some serious jealousy and misunderstandings in my relationships. I had an ex that would always be up in my business about everything I did. She went as far as sneaking out of the room while I was asleep with my phone and going through it. Little did she know, that I knew. I would have to delete any evidence that hinted at the idea of me interacting with another female to avoid any confrontation. I wasn't cheating or anything of the like, just conversating. It's like I wasn't allowed to have any female friends unless she approved. I never bothered going through hers, I trusted her, at least that's what I made myself believe. But that one day that I did finally stoop to her level, it was the first and last time I would ever see her and that phone of hers.
Lucky for me I'm currently with a girl that isn't as crazy like that or that gives me any reason to raise suspicion. Even though having a Facebook did cause some tension whenever a girl would comment on something I posted or posted on my Facebook wall, it never really got out of hand. Jealousy can get very out of hand very quickly, especially when you don't understand the situation and automatically jump to rediculous conclusions. Don't get me wrong I am just as guilty of being jealous and jumping to conclusions as anyone else is. But nowadays I just don't even bother with social networks anymore because of what unnecessary conflict it causes in a relationship that is just too important to me.

  14. I personally think that technology has made things worse for people that are in relationships. I know that with me and my boyfriend, we constantly fight over stupid things that we see on each others Facebook, instagram, text messages, Skype, etc. Girls would leave stupid comments on his pictures and status' and guys would message me. Always a constant fight. We could both be laying on the couch watching tv without speaking a word to one another because he was on his phone. And this would cause him to ignore me.That would piss me off!!! So yeah i think that technology has renderred our communication with one another and has allowed us to be jealous and annoyed and mad over nothing.

  15. All these social medias have brought the word stalker to a new meaning. Anyone can find out any information about you, they can even get past the restrictions. It is technology, anything is able to be hacked into. I have always thought the abundance of social media is going to destroy a relationship here and there. Then again cheaters are able to be detected that much sooner, unless they are smart and dont become involved in the different sites. The interpersonal communication between two people is slowly become near transparent. When a couple is dating all your doing is constantly checking the other at the end of the day. What will be left to chat about? You saw all the staus updates, you saw all the check-ins, whats left? Where is the mystery in that? The question of what you did today will no longer be a question because you will already know the answer by just checking their facebook or foursquare. Meaning realtionships become less meaningful and less interesting, making them fail. Communication between two people is key in a realtionship, but when the basic conversations go out the window, is the couple going to survive?

  16. I think the advancements in technology have been like a double edged sword. There are many benefits that come from the use of technology in relationships. Today, we are able to travel half way around the world and still be able to keep in touch with loved ones in a matter of seconds. Because of this though, we have lost some privacy. I think that technology can hinder or help your relationship, it just depends what kind of relationship you have. You should be able to trust and openly communicate with your significant other. Technology will hinder or help your relationships, depending on how you use it.

  17. I honestly believe that social media has hindered our ability to be able to communicate face to face. Although it makes informaton more readily availiable and easy to access, we still lack the opportunity to speak with concequence... In my experience with job applicants and interviews, it seems that younger people are more highly insecure when speaking and trying to making impressions because they arent aware of how to carry themselves when they arent behind a computer screen. Young applicants dont have many opportunities to act in professional setting and often lack the ability to speak in a professional manner that would impress employers.... When putting in applications online, words on a screen can seem very impressive but we need the action to back up our words.

  18. I feel that social networking sites have only effected the relationships in this generation in a bad way. Because nowadays, if a relationship becomes "Facebook official", and certain people weren't told about it straight up, they get offended for whatever reason. I also feel that because people now put their relationships online, it makes other people think it's okay to get invoked in it, instead of the relationship consisting of just 2 people like it should be.
